What the standard requires

BS 5839-1 does not prescribe a fixed lifespan for smoke detectors.

It requires systems to be maintained in efficient working order and good repair.

Performance changes over time, and sensitivity cannot be fully validated through functional testing alone.

For this reason, manufacturers and fire safety professionals commonly recommend replacement at around 10 years, reflecting typical sensor life expectancy.

The question isn’t whether a detector still works – it’s whether it still works as intended.
